TRAINING
There are
significant vulnerabilities in open societies, and the maritime
environment is no different. Much attention has been focused on
the development, funding and acquisition of new technologies and
equipment to solve our security problems. Security related equipment
is important, but our recent experience
has identified training as an even greater critical need
for port, facility and vessel personnel. Investments in expensive
security systems are worthless if the people monitoring them do
not have an appreciation for security.
What
is lacking in many industrial environments is a security culture.
For many years industry has nurtured and developed a safety culture.
This has manifested itself in many outward practices such as hardhats,
steel toed shoes, safety glasses, ear protection, safety committees
and large signs proudly proclaiming days since the last lost time
accident. None of this exists for security
and it is due to the lack of awareness among employees and formal
training for manager's assigned security as a collateral duty.
MarPortSecurity
now
offers security training courses for managers, guard forces and
employees that can help instill a security culture in your organization.
This type of training was recently mandated by the new International
Maritime Security Code, and will be required by U.S. regulation
as well.
Ship
or Company Security Officer Training
The new
International Maritime Security Code and proposed federal regulations
will require training for these mandated positions. We can assist
with the development of training courses or serve as instructors
in your courses. These courses will need to be approved by the National
Maritime Center of the U.S. Coast Guard.
General
Security Awareness Training for Employees
Employees
who are knowledgeable about the criminal threats that they may encounter,
and the basic procedures to report and respond to suspicious activity
can greatly enhance the physical security of your vessel or facility.
In essence, they act as "force multipliers" …extra sets
of eyes and ears - people who want to protect the safety and health
of themselves and others, as well as their jobs.
Security Planning and Procedures Training
Managers
and other senior personnel need to be trained in the contents and
procedures contained in your security plan. A security plan sitting
on a shelf, developed by one employee or a contractor, is not going
to be effective when you need it.
Awareness
Training For Personnel Traveling To Foreign Locations
Employees
traveling to foreign locations are particularly at risk in today's
world and should receive training which identifies various terrorist
threats, criminal activity as well as safety and health concerns
at their destination. Americans tend to have a false sense of security
because they believe that as Americans they are somehow immune to
harm and that our system of jurisprudence follows them where ever
they go. After September 11 we know that, if anything, we are primary
targets. MarPortSecurity can instruct travelers on basic precautions
to avoid situations that could lead to harm, as well as more in
depth material on how to recognize and avoid developing personal
attack situations.
Maritime Law Enforcement
Training for Security Forces
MarPortSecurity
personnel have spent years in maritime law enforcement. We are in
the process of developing a training course for security personnel
that will focus on waterborne threats and the proven procedures
to deter and defeat these from small boats. If you currently have
a need in this area please contact us to discuss elements of this
training that we are prepared to deliver.
